2nd-Half Flurry Propels Adelphi Past Bentley in Battle for 1st-Round Home Game

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Junior Carly Aceves (La Mesa, Calif.) erupted for three goals in a span of just 5:45 in the second half as Adelphi University clinched a home game in next week's Northeast-10 Conference playoffs with a 3-1 win over Bentley University at Motamed Field in college field action Saturday afternoon.

Bentley, which would have played at home in the first round with a win, will now have to travel to a first-round game.  Depending on the outcome of Sunday's Saint Anselm-Assumption game, the Falcons (11-7, 5-5 NE-10) will either have to play at third-seeded Stonehill or make a return trip to Adelphi.

The first 50 minutes went well for the Falcons with a goal in the 21st minute by Meghan Talerman (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable HS) producing a 1-0 lead. The unassisted goal was the eighth of the year for the sophomore.

Aceves, who entered the game with only four goals on the year, netted the equalizer at 51:09 off an assist from sophomore Kristen Bagley (Holbrook, N.Y.). Four minutes later, she put the Panthers (10-8, 5-5 NE-10) in front, and less than two minutes later, she completed her hat trick for a 3-1 lead.

Adelphi had most of the offensive opportunities in the game as the Panthers outshot the Falcons 17-9 and had 20 penalty corners, twice as many as Bentley.

Sophomore Kelly Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) made five saves to earn the win in goal and sophomore Katie Kelley (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS) recorded ten for Bentley.
