Saint Anselm Strikes Early and Upsets #10 Bentley, 3-1

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Senior Elizabeth Sears (Danvers, Mass.) assisted on a pair of Saint Anselm College goals in the first 12:01 and the Hawks went on to upset visiting Bentley University, 3-1, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action Wednesday night at Grappone Stadium.

Bentley went into the contest ranked tenth nationally in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division II coaches poll, but came out with records of 9-6 overall and 3-4 NE-10. Saint Anselm, which outshot the Falcons 18-8, improved to 5-8 overall and 3-5 in the conference.

Junior Bridget Davis (Mansfield, Mass.) gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead 7:45 into the game, netting her second of the year off a penalty corner. Barely four minutes late, sophomore Meagan Halligan (North Branford, Conn.) tallied her first and all of a sudden, it was a 2-0 game.

It remained a 2-1 game until the midpoint of the second half when sophomore Nicole Rugan (Chelsea, Maine) scored her first of the season to restore the differential to two.

Freshman Katherine Sears (Northboro, Mass.) earned the win in net following a four-save effort, and Bentley sophomore Katie Kelley (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS) made nine stops for the Falcons.

Bentley will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon at Southern Connecticut State.
