Martorelli, Kelley Team Up for 1-0 Bentley Win at Assumption

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior captain Melissa Martorelli (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel HS) accounted for the game's only goal on a first-half penalty stroke and sophomore Katie Kelley (Walpole/Walpole HS) registered her sixth shutout as Bentley University opened the Northeast-10 Conference portion of its schedule with a 1-0 win at Assumption College in college field hockey action Saturday afternoon.

The victory lifted the Falcons to 6-2 on the year and dropped the Greyhounds to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the NE-10.

Martorelli's successful penalty stroke, in the 22nd minute, following a violation by Assumption goalie Heather Philbrick (Kennebunkport, Maine) while stopping a shot from Falcon sophomore Sally James (Mequon, Wisc./Univ. School of Milwaukee).

The goal was the second of her career.  Ironically, the other one also came on a stroke against Assumption, during a 2-0 victory last October.

Kelley, who lowered her goals against average to 0.87, was credited with seven saves, her highest total in any of the shutouts this fall. Philbrick registered five saves for Assumption and was helped by a pair of defensive saves from sophomore Allison Juneau (Auburn).

Bentley outshot the home team by one, 9-8, and also had one more penalty corner, 6-5. Most of the offensive chances came in the first half as the two teams combined for only four shots and four corners after intermission.

The Falcons will be at home Tuesday night, hosting undefeated Stonehill College in a key Northeast-10 showdown at 7 pm.
