Lirange, Kelley Help Bentley Top Assumption, 3-0; 4th Win in 5 Games for Falcons

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior Gina Lirange (Auburn/Auburn HS) scored twice in a span of 72 seconds and sophomore Katie Kelley (Walpole/Walpole HS) recorded her Northeast-10 -leading fourth shutout as Bentley University blanked Assumption College, 3-0, in non-conference field hockey action Thursday evening at Bentley.

The win was the fourth in a five-game span for Bentley, all coming via the shutout. The Falcons, who crammed all their scoring into the final 15:15 of the first half, improved to 4-2 overall while Assumption fell to .500 at 3-3.

Lirange, the number two scorer in the NE-10, continued her scoring barrage midway through the opening half. Her seventh of 2013 came at the 19:45 mark on a redirect after a pass from sophomore Sally James (Mequon, Wisc./Univ. School of Milwaukee). A little more than a minute later, sophomore Becca Moore (Belmont/Belmont HS) delivered the ball to an open Lirange right in front of the cage, and she knocked it home for her eighth of the year and a 2-0 lead.

Lirange, the reigning NE-10 Player of the Week, has eight goals and one assist in her last five games.

With just over two minutes left until intermission, Bentley turned a penalty corner into a goal, the first career score for sophomore Molly Rowe (Newburyport/Newburyport HS). Senior Colleen Moran (Lincoln, R.I./Lincoln HS) sent the ball out, and Rowe drove it into the cage.

Kelley recorded five saves en route to the shutout. Senior Heather Philbrick (Kennebunkport, Maine) was in net for the Hounds and she was credited with one save.

Assumption held the advantage in shots, 10-8, and penalty corners, 5-3.

Bentley's next contest is Saturday afternoon at American International College (1 pm).
