Goals by Martorelli, Lirange Give Bentley 2-0 Senior Day Win over Assumption

WALTHAM, Mass. – Goals by junior Melissa Martorelli (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel HS) and sophomore Gina Lirange (Auburn/Auburn HS) lifted the Bentley University field hockey team to a 2-0 Senior Day victory over Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption on Saturday.

The streaking Falcons have won four in a row while improving to 8-6 overall and 5-2 in NE-10 play. The Greyhounds fell to 7-8 overall and 4-4 in the NE-10.

Martorelli's first career goal on a penalty stroke at the 27:50 mark gave Bentley the lead at 1-0 which they would not relinquish.

The score stayed that way until Lirange put in her sixth goal of the season to put Bentley up 2-0 at 58:48. The goal came off a penalty corner by freshman Becca Moore (Belmont/Belmont HS), who played it to senior defenseman Kelsey Mattson (Bristol, N.H./Newfound Regional HS) at the top of the circle. Mattson settled the ball and fed it to Lirange, who fired a shot past Assumption's Lauren Neilan for the goal.

Goalie Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) earned the win for Bentley, her eighth of the season and fourth shutout.

The Falcons will shoot for their fifth straight win when they host Saint Michael's on Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
