Maguire, Lirange Help Bentley to 3rd Straight Win, 3-1 over Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – Senior Beth Maguire (Medfield, Mass./Medfield HS) and sophomore Gina Lirange (Auburn, Mass./Auburn HS) each had a goal and an assist as Bentley University used three early goals to top Franklin Pierce University, 3-1, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action Wednesday afternoon at Sodexho Field.

The win was the third straight for the Falcons, who are fifth in this week's NCAA Division II North Region rankings. Bentley improved to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the NE-10, good for a third-place tie with Adelphi, which is home against UMass-Lowell tonight.

All three Bentley scores came in the first 18:03 with Maguire getting things started with her eighth of the year at 5:33. Her turnaround shot in traffic was tipped into the cage by Franklin Pierce netminder Sarah Cote (Athol, Mass.).

Maguire provided the assist as Lirange made it a 2-0 game in the 15th minute, and Lirange set up freshman Meghan Talerman (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable HS) on goal number three at 18:03. It was the fifth goal of the season for both Lirange and Talerman, tying them for second on the team behind Maguire.

It was the second straight game all three picked up a goal, and one of the three has tallied 15 of the team's last 16 goals.

The lone Franklin Pierce goal was scored by junior Chanelle Letarte (Lunenburg, Mass.), in the 26th minute.

Senior goalie Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) made three saves to record the victory and Cote had five for the Ravens (3-12, 1-7 NE-10). Shots were even at 10 apiece and Bentley had an 8-7 edge in penalty corners.

Bentley will be at home Saturday morning for a 10 am contests against Assumption, currently the fourth-ranked team in the region.
