First-Half Goals by Marcinek & Lirange Propel Bentley to 3-0 Win

WALTHAM, Mass. – Goals by senior Kaitlyn Marcinek (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) and sophomore Gina Lirange (Auburn/Auburn HS) in the first 15 minutes helped propel Bentley University to a 3-0 non-conference field hockey win over visiting Franklin Pierce University Saturday afternoon.

The shutout was the second of the season, and eighth of her career, for Falcon senior tri-captain Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS). She was rarely tested in the first half, but withstood 10 Raven shots and 12 FPU penalty corners in the second, and finished with six saves.

Marcinek's goal, her second off the year, came off a penalty corner taken by senior Beth Maguire (Medfield/Medfield HS) in the tenth minute. Freshman Meghan Talerman (Centerville/ Barnstable HS) made the stop, and Marcinek drilled the ball into the back of the cage from just inside the circle.

Lirange made it a 2-0 game at 14:11 of the opening half, her first of the season set up by freshman Becca Moore (Belmont/Belmont HS).

Bentley picked up an insurance goal 12:34 into the second half with Maguire tallying her third of the year on a re-direct, after a shot by freshman Kelsey Howard (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough HS).

Bentley, which evened its record at 3-3, dominated play in the first half, entering the break with a 15-1 advantage in shots and the only four penalty corners before intermission. The Falcons finished the game with a 24-11 edge in shots, but the Ravens (2-3) had five more penalty corners, 12-7.

Bentley wraps up the non-conference portion of its schedule Tuesday night at Assumption and plays its first Northeast-10 match of the season Thursday evening against Stonehill.
