SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Campbell University transfer quarterback Jayson Demild (Sayreville, N.J.) ran for two touchdowns and passed for a go-ahead TD in the third quarter as American International  College scored in every quarter to upend Bentley University, 28-23, in non-conference college football Saturday afternoon at Abdow Field.

AIC, with its first win over Bentley since 2014, evened its record at 1-1. Bentley, despite controlling the ball for more than 36 minutes and running 28 more plays (85-57), fell to 0-2 on the season.

There were four lead changes in less the nine minutes surrounding halftime, including three in the final 2:41 of the second quarter.

Bentley took its first lead of the afternoon, 10-7, when senior running back Jordan Artope (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson HS) finished a 15-play, 80-yard drive. Eleven of the plays were on the ground with Artope getting the ball five times for 22 yards. Junior Andrew Brazicki (Franklin Park, N.J./St. Thomas Aquinas HS) was also a factor with six carries for 27 yards, and junior QB Stephen Sturm (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley HS) completed four passes for 31 yards.

AIC answered right back with a two-yard run by junior Samad Davila (New Brunswick, N.J.) giving the Jackets a 14-10 lead with 74 seconds left in the half.

It was a short-lived lead as Sturm teamed up with junior wide receiver Austin Ryan (Foxborough/Foxborough HS) on a 20-yard TD pass with seven seconds left on the first half clock. The seven-play, 71-yard drive saw Sturm complete five of six for 53 yards.

AIC, down 17-14 at intermission, jumped back on top five-and-a-half minutes into the second half when Demild connected with sophomore Fayeson Carney (East Orange, N.J.) on a 24-yard TD pass.

The Yellow Jackets pushed their advantage to 11 when Demild finished an eight-play, 61-yard drive with a two-yard keeper midway through the fourth.

Bentley answered with an 11-play drive that was capped by a two-yard run by Artope and was within five with 3:29. The defense did its job, forcing a three-and-out, and gave the ball back to the offense at the Falcon 33 with 2:20 to play. The Falcons moved to midfield before turning the ball over on downs with 1:22 left.

Sturm finished 27 of 39 for 232 yards with senior slot receiver Drew Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield Academy) catching `13 for 91 (pushing his career reception total to 150) and Ryan six for 56. On the ground, Brazicki ran 25 rimes for 87 yards and Artope had nine for 30.

Demild completed 16 of 29 for 200 yards and also scrambled for 77. Davila, who broke a 51-yard run on the penultimate play of the game, finished with 85 yards.

AIC outgained the visitors 424-367 and averaged more than seven yards per play. Bentley turned the ball over twice, including an interception in the red zone in the third quarter.

Senior defensive back Pete Thorbahn (Norwell/Xaverian Bros. HS) recorded his 14th career interception and had seven tackles for Bentley, tying for the team-lead with junior linebacker Marc Doran (Ramsey, N.J./Saint Joseph Reg. HS).

Bentley, which will see AIC again on the final Saturday of the regular season, has a bye this coming weekend and will host New Haven on Sept. 27 in the home opener. That game will be webcast as part of the NCAA Showcase.
