4-4 Bentley Set to Face New Haven on Senior Day, Looking to Get Back on Track

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University football program will pay tribute to its 25 seniors on Saturday before taking on the University of New Haven in its final home game of the 2017 season.

Kickoff, with a free webcast available at www.bentleyfalcons.tv, is set for 1 pm with the Senior Day festivities beginning shortly after 12:30 pm.

Topping the list of seniors are the quartet who have served as the team's captains this season: quarterback Mack Lowrie (Foxborough/Roxbury Latin School), running back Martin Bannerman (Pawtucket, R.I./La Salle Academy), offensive lineman Connor Peck (Sherborn/Catholic Memorial HS) and defensive back Junior Chery (Waltham/Waltham HS).

Chery is one of 15 members of Bentley's Class of 2018 who play on the defensive side of the ball with that list including a half-dozen linebackers: Vinny Banek (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson HS), Rogers Boylan (Dover/Dover-Sherborn HS), Brandon Brown (Oxon Hill, Md./Suitland HS), Aaron Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich./Walled Lake Northern HS), Joey Piatnik (Bethel, Conn./Bethel HS) and Kyle Wisnieski (Mansfield/Mansfield HS).

The other defensive backs, in addition to Chery, are Michael Fawehinmi (Lynn/St. John's Prep HS), Matt Iannone (North Andover/North Andover HS) and Michael Reitsch (Rockford, Ill./Guilford HS).

From the d-line, Bentley will be recognizing Dan Catalano (North Reading/Austin Prep HS), Andrew Crane (Amherst, N.H./Lawrence Academy), Noah Lamothe (Weatogue, Conn./Simsbury HS). Luke Morrison (Attleboro/Attleboro HS) and Phil Rigoglioso (Ridgewood, N.J./Bergen Catholic HS).

Bentley's seniors on offense, in addition to the three captains, are linemen Matt Choinski (Huntington, N.Y./John H. Glenn HS) and Troy Thomas (Fredericksburg, Va./James Monroe HS), quarterback Joe Slattery (Cedar Grove, N.J./Cedar Grove HS), running backs Jeff Keil (Tampa, Fla./ Wharton HS) and Connor Robison (Plano, Texas/Frisco Liberty HS) and wide receiver/punter Brendan Burke (Norristown, Pa./Haverford School).

Completing Bentley's class of 2018 is KC Horton (Guilford, Conn./Guilford HS), who has been the Falcons' holder this season.

Bentley, 4-4 overall and 4-3 NE10, has dropped its last two despite putting a total of 77 points on the scoreboard behind freshman QB and two-time Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week Stephen Sturm (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley HS). Before the losses to Stonehill (41-35 in OT two weeks ago) and Southern Connecticut State (45-42 this past Saturday), the Falcons had won 20 of the previous 22 times they scored at least 35.

Sturm, who took over the signal-calling duties for Bentley after Lowrie was injured in the American International game, has amassed 622 yards total offense and accounted for eight TDs (six through the air, two rushing) in his first two collegiate starts. In five appearances this fall, he's completed 72.6 percent of his passes.

Classmate Austin Ryan (Foxborough/Foxborough HS), the leader in most NE10 receiving categories and number two in Division II in yards per reception (26.2), is coming off a standout effort against Southern. Four of his six receptions went for at least 35 yards and he finished with 209 yards and three TDs. He'll enter the season's final two games with 11 TD, 1,006 all-purpose yards and 866 receiving yards.

Following an injury to junior Drew Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield Academy), one of the conference leaders with 51 receptions, classmate Jordan Zlogar (Clifton Park N.Y./Shenendehowa HS) has impressed. He had six catches for 76 yards at Stonehill, and followed that with five for 63 against Southern.

The ability to force turnovers has been a key to Bentley's success this season, but that hasn't happened the last two weeks when the Falcons have given up a total of 781 rushing yards. Coach Bill Kavanaugh's club has 16 takeaways in its four wins but only two in the four losses.

Junior safety Nick Athy (Holliston/Holliston HS), after 13 tackles against Southern, has taken over the team lead in that category with his total of 54 one more than junior linebacker Andrew Carmichael (Wayland/Wayland HS) and two more than Chretien.

While Bentley's three conference losses have all been close (two three-pointers, one in OT), New Haven has found success in nailbiters and as a result, will come into Waltham at 6-2 overall (5-2 NE10). All four of the Chargers' home games have been one-point games with wins over Pace (21-20), Stonehill (23-22) and American International (20-19) following a 35-34 loss to LIU Post.

In Saturday's game, senior quarterback Ajee Patterson ran the ball in from the four with 2:15 left to give New Haven its sixth win in eight contests this fall. Earlier in the game, he had thrown his 14th and 15th TD passes of the season.

Patterson's top targets have been Justin White and Devin Martin, both of whom have other 600 receiving yards and five TD catches. On the ground, Ryan McCarthy has been a force, running for 611 yards and four TDs.

Bentley will be looking for its first win over New Haven since 2009 with five of the last seven decided by seven or less. Last year, the Chargers scored ten unanswered second-half points and limited the Falcons to 199 yards total offense in a 17-7 win down in West Haven.

Following the New Haven game, Bentley will wrap up the 2017 campaign at undefeated and nationally-ranked Assumption College Nov. 11.
