Pace Puts an End to Bentley’s 3-Game Win Streak, 20-17

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Despite the first career 100-yard rushing game by freshman Andrew Brazicki (Franklin Park, N.J./Bishop Ahr HS) and 15 receptions from junior Drew Mahoney (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield Academy), Bentley University saw its three-game winning streak halted by Pace University, 20-17, in Northeast-10 Conference football at Pace Stadium Saturday.

The Setters, 3-2 overall and 2-2 NE10, were led by junior Jhalen Bien-Aime (Dorchester, Mass.) with the conference rushing leader lugging the ball 32 times for 139 yards and a touchdown.

Despite Bien-Aime's efforts, Bentley finished with a big advantage in total offense, outgaining the Setters 467-273 yards, including 312-97 through the air.

It was a red-zone interception in the final minute of the first half and special teams errors that proved costly to the Falcons.  On the short end of a 10-7 score late in the second quarter, Bentley drove 77 yards in 11 plays to the Pace 7. However, junior free safety B'Jon Couther (San Lorenzo, Calif.) picked off Falcon senior QB Mack Lowrie (Foxborough, Mass./Roxbury Latin School), denying the visitors a chance to take their first lead of the afternoon.

In terms of special teams, Bentley missed a 27-yard field goal midway through the fourth and roughed the kicker in the second quarter, extending a drive that resulted in a long field goal that put Pace in front to stay. The Falcons also had difficulties in punting, totaling only 33 yards on three attempts, including one that was blocked in the third quarter.

Following a scoreless first quarter, a one-run run by Bien-Aime gave Pace a 7-0 lead with 12:13 showing on the second quarter clock.

Bentley quickly answered, an 18-yard pass from Lowrie to Mahoney capping a five-play, 70-yard drive that featured runs of 20 and 30 yards by Brazicki.

Pace responded with a 12-play, 39-yard drive that was capped by a 43-yard field goal by sophomore Pat Davis (Forked River, N.J). Bentley appeared to force a three-and-out on the possession, but the roughing the kicker flag gave the home team another chance, which they capitalized on.

The third quarter ended with Pace on top 17-10. A 19-yard TD pass from sophomore Brandon Simmons (Willingboro, N.J) to senior Prince Unaegbu (Boston, Mass.) on a fake field goal produced the Setters' second TD. That was just a 34-yard drive following a blocked punt by senior Chukwuemeka Njuku-Obi (Newark, N.J.).

Bentley got three points back with 3:57 left in the third, a 20-yard field goal by sophomore Grant Buchanan (Holliston, Mass./Holliston HS).

In the opening minutes of the fourth, Davis delivered a 23-yard field goal for Pace, restoring the Setters' advantage to ten at 20-10.

Bentley pulled within three with 1:17 to play, Lowrie teaming up with Brazicki on a seven-yard TD pass. The Falcons were unsuccessful on the onside kick but got the ball back with 55 seconds left after a three-and-out. Four completions by Lowrie got the ball down to the Pace 32, but Buchanan's 49-yard field goal attempt on the game's final play was wide left.

Lowrie finished 31 of 46 for 312 yards with Mahoney (134 receiving yards) and junior Michael Correia (Fall River, Mass./Durfee HS) combining for 22 of the 31 catches. Correia finished with seven for 83 yards. Brazicki gained his 109 yards on 19 carries.

Bentley's leading tacklers were Andrew Carmichael (Wayland, Mass./Wayland HS) and Aaron Chretien (Commerce Township, Mich./Walled Lake Northern HS), with nine apiece. The Falcons' only takeaway was a fourth-quarter INT by sophomore Peter Thorbahn (Norwell, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS).

Following a bye next Saturday, Bentley will look to bounce back Oct. 14 at home against American International.
