McDonald Named Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Week

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University junior safety Sam McDonald (Norfolk/King Philip Reg. HS) has been named the Defensive Player of the Week in the Northeast-10 Conference following his outstanding play in the Falcons' 19-14 come-from-behind win over Saint Anselm College Saturday.

McDonald had two key interceptions, along with four tackles, in the victory. His first pick set up a go-ahead TD in the second quarter and his second locked up the win with 17 seconds left.

The two interceptions gave McDonald three for the season, tying him for second most in the NE-10, and a dozen for his career. That is the most by any current NCAA Division II junior and put him ninth in program history.

His efforts helped limit Saint Anselm to 271 yards total offense, the third time in four games the Falcon defense has allowed less than 300. The victory, also the team's third in the last four weeks, lifted coach Bill Kavanaugh's team (3-3, 3-2 NE-10) into a five-way tie for second in the conference.

Also recognized by the conference, with selection to the NE-10 Weekly Honor Roll, was senior quarterback Matt Montalto (West Yarmouth/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS).

Montalto led Bentley to its third fourth-quarter comeback in the last four weeks while establishing career bests for total offense (318), passing yards (227) and rushing yards (91). He completed 19 of 28 passes with no interceptions, carried the ball 14 times with an average of 6.5 yards per attempt, and threw an 11-yard TD pass. In addition, he sparked the Falcons' late comeback with a career-best 65-yard completion with 1:27 left.

Bentley is back in action Saturday with a 1 pm home game against American International.
