Guadagnoli Selected for Swede Nelson Award; Also Named to NEFW Alll-New England Team with Hill

WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley University quarterback and graduate student Danny Guadagnoli (Framingham/Framingham HS) was named the 2014 Division II recipient of the 69th annual Nils V. "Swede" Nelson Award by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston.

The award is given for exceptional achievement for in sportsmanship, academics and athletics, and will be presented Thursday, Dec. 18 when the organization holds its annual Bob Whelan College Football Awards Night at the Marriott Hotel in Burlington.

"Many carry the title of student-athlete, but only a select few honor that label by approaching their responsibilities in the classroom and on the field with dignity and courage," said Bentley head coach Bill Kavanaugh. "While his grades and performances are singularly impressive, Danny's conduct and class write his true legacy, and make him the ideal candidate for this special award."

Guadagnoli, previously cited as the Offensive Player of the Year in the Northeast-10 Conference, is the third Bentley player, all quarterbacks, to receive the prestigious award as he joined Mike Rymsha (1995) and Bryant Johnson (2011) on the select list.

Guadagnoli was also named to the Division II-III All-New England Team by the New England Football Writers, along with favorite target Jeff Hill (Mansfield/Mansfield HS). Hill, a senior wide receiver, was one of five repeat honorees on the 28-player team.

Those awards will be presented December 11 when the New England Football Writers holds its annual Captains and Awards Banquet at the Montvale Plaza in Stoneham.

Guadagnoli led the Northeast-10 in touchdown passes (31) and passing yards per game (313.0) while breaking the school record for passing yards in a season for the second straight year, finishing with 3,443. He completed 59 percent of his passes overall, including 64 percent on second and third down plays, and was picked off only ten times in 260 attempts.

His season included multiple TD passes in ten of 11 contests, with four or more four times, and six games with over 300 yards total offense.

Guadagnoli finished his career ranking second in program history in most passing categories, including passing yards (9,175), total offense (9,702) and TD passes (69).

A May 2014 Magna Cum Laude graduate of Bentley, Guadagnoli is currently working on his MBA in finance.

The six-foot-four Hill was the premier receiver in the Northeast-10 this season, leading the conference in both receiving yards (1,113) and TD catches (12) while catching 68 balls with an average of 16.4 per reception. Included were six receptions of 50 yards or more.

Hill finished his career with 3,489 yards, fifth best among active Division II players and third most in program history. Of his 200 career receptions, 37 resulted in touchdowns with his 224 career points ranking fourth in Bentley history.
