Guadagnoli Throws for 3 Scores as Bentley Blanks Pace, 31-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – Graduate student Danny Guadagnoli (Framingham/Framingham HS) threw for three touchdowns and 357 yards, surpassing 8,000 in the process, and the Falcon defense posted two second-half red-zone stops en route to the shutout as Bentley University rolled to a 31-0 Senior Day win over Pace University Saturday afternoon at Bentley.

The Falcon D limited Pace to 202 net yards while coming up with three takeaways (two fumbles, one interception) and six sacks. The win was Bentley's second straight while the Setters (0-8, 0-7 NE-10) were blanked for the third consecutive game.

Bentley's first three touchdowns all came on fairly quick drives, each taking less than three minutes and no more than seven plays.

The game's opening score came with 8:52 left in the opening quarter, Guadagnoli teaming up with junior Chris Walsh (Attleboro/Attleboro HS) on a 47-yard scoring pass. The Falcon QB found Walsh wide open around the 20 and he went untouched into the end zone for his first touchdown of the season.

Two plays into the second quarter, Guadagnoli connected with sophomore Sean Myers (Foxboro/ Roxbury Latin HS) for a six-yard TD pass, making it a 14-0 game. That followed a 20-yard completion to senior Jeff Hill (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) on a fourth-and-five.

Bentley made it 21-0 with 4:50 to play in the first half, sophomore Martin Bannerman (Pawtucket, R.I./La Salle Academy) completing a seven-play, 62-yard drive with a three-yard run up the middle. That possession included a third-down conversion and a 41-yard pass to Myers.

A 32-yard field goal by junior Michael Baron (Medfield/Roxbury Latin School) with 24 seconds left in the second sent Bentley into the break with a 24-point lead. It was the eighth field goal of the season for Baron, who also remained perfect on extra points, kicking four to improve to 27-of-27 on the year.

The only scoring of the second half came with 8:54 left in the third. Guadagnoli went outside to Bannerman and the running back took it in for his second TD of the game, this one a seven-yarder. It was the 60th career TD pass for the Guadagnoli, who has thrown for 2,491 yards and 22 TDs this season, both conference-highs.

Guadagnoli, who moved into second on Bentley's all-time passing list with 8,223 yards, completed 26 of 37 passes in the game before exiting the game early in the fourth. Walsh led the receiving corps with six catches for 76 yards and both Myers (95 yards) and Hill (78 yards) caught five balls.

Senior linebacker Blaine Hopwood (New Bedford/New Bedford HS) led the Bentley defense with eight tackles (three for losses), two sacks and a fumble recovery. Sophomore linebacker Bryan Hardy (Barnstable/Barnstable HS) also had a solid afternoon with six tackles, one fumble recovery and an interception.

An interception gave Pace the ball on the Falcon 18 midway through the third but a third-down fumble was recovered by Hardy, ending that possession. In the fourth, the Setters drove to the Bentley three before turning the ball over on downs.

Bentley totaled 411 yards in offense with all but 49 coming through the air. Pace also had difficulties on the ground with 198 of its 202 yards coming via the pass. The Falcons finished with a 20-15 advantage in first downs, converted 8 of 15 first downs and controlled the ball for 34:13.

Bentley, 3-5 overall and 2-5 in the NE-10, will be on the road next Saturday, a 1 pm start at Assumption College.
