As Bentley University prepares for the 2014 season opener against Mercyhurst on Saturday, starting quarterback Danny Guadagnoli is brimming with optimism.

"I think the experience that we have on both sides of the football will be one of our strengths. We have an unbelievable group of seniors," said the Framingham native. "Last year, we had a young team that was trying to find its identity. Now we have all the talent in the world and are trying to become competitive and work hard as a group. We'll see how it plays out."

Guadagnoli and the Falcons are entering Year 1 of the Bill Kavanaugh era. Kavanaugh, a 2004 Bentley graduate, served most recently as director of player personnel at Penn State under Bill O'Brien, the ex-Pats assistant and current Houston Texans grid boss. He succeeds Thom Boerman, who retired after last season with a four-year record of 33-17.

"He's just been a leader from the day I got here. He's a real solid leader for the team and has done everything we've asked," said the 32-year-old Kavanaugh of Guadagnoli. "He's a super competitive kid. He wants to win. He's a member of the Falcons Society (academic). He's one of the most respected kids on campus. He does it all. I think we've put a lot on him to make sure that everyone is in the right position. We're confident in his ability."
