Late Aerial Barrage Propels Bentley to 38-24 Win over LIU Post

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior quarterback Danny Guadagnoli (Framingham/Framingham HS) threw four touchdown passes in the final 16:27, including three to junior wide receiver Jeff Hill (Mansfield/Mansfield HS), as Bentley University staged a come-from-behind 38-24 win over visiting LIU Post in Northeast-10 Conference football Friday night.

Guadagnoli finished 23 of 39 for a career-best 381 yards, including 147 in the fourth quarter alone, with two of his receivers reaching the century mark in receiving yards. Hill caught eight balls for 154 yards and sophomore Chris Walsh (Attleboro/Attleboro HS) had five for a career-high 136 yards and one TD.

Bentley, which amassed 514 yards in total offense against the previously unbeaten Pioneers, also had a 100-yard rusher as junior Jet Kollie (Lowell/Lowell HS) ran for 111 yards in 16 carries.

The Falcons, who faced a 24-17 deficit with under seven minutes left, evened the contest at 24 with 6:30 to play when Guadagnoli took advantage of a free play to team up with Walsh on a 65-yard scoring strike. The Pioneer defensive end moved early, and the Falcon QB capitalized, going deep to his wide receiver for the tying score.

On Post's ensuing possession, junior QB Steven Laurino (Boise, Idaho) lost the ball on a third-and-nine, with Falcon senior linebacker Mike Marini (Marlborough/Marlborough HS) recovering at the Pioneer 38. It was the second takeaway of the night for Marini, who was making his first career start. Earlier, he had an interception that led to a Bentley field goal.

After a 13-yard completion to Walsh, Guadagnoli found Hill in the corner of the end zone for the go-ahead score. Sophomore Michael Baron (Medfield/Roxbury Latin HS) tacked on the extra point and the Falcons were up 31-24 with 4:19 left.

The Bentley defense forced LIU into a three-and-out, and after a short punt, the Falcons took over at the Pioneer 47. Three plays after a 17-yard run by Kollie, Guadagnoli and Hill teamed up again, this time on a 34-yard TD pass to make it a 14-point bulge with 2:22 to play.

Bentley led 10-7 at the half on a 32-yard Baron field goal and a 40-yard scoring run by Kollie, in which he broke thru the line and outraced the Pioneer defenders to the end zone.

The Falcons' first three possessions in the second half resulted in a punt, an interception and a fumble, and LIU Post took advantage, scoring 10 straight points to go in front by seven, 17-10. Laurino connected with freshman Michael Richardson (West Babylon, N.Y.) on a six-yard TD pass and senior Karsten Viste (Randaberg, Norway) connected on a 30-yard field goal.

Bentley answered Viste's field goal with a six-play, 70-yard drive that culminated with Hill reaching over the defender for a game-tying 15-yard TD reception.

It remained tied for only about three minutes as Post's Mike Williams (Westbury, N.Y.) broke a 48-yard TD run, restoring the Pioneers' seven-point lead.

Walsh, Hill and Kollie all exceeded 150 yards in all-purpose running for the Falcons, who finished with a 24-15 edge in first downs and 34:01 in possession time.

LIU Post (2-1, 1-1 NE-10) finished with 347 yards total offense, including only 129 in the first half, with Laurino involved in most. He completed 16 of 31 passes for 196 yards and two TDs, and also had 50 net rushing yards.

Marino and junior safety Nick McCarthy (Winthrop/Winthrop HS) each had nine tackles to pace the Falcon defense, with McCarthy also making an interception. Two of Bentley's four sacks were made by sophomore Jeff Amell (Bar Mills, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS).

After a three-game homestand to open the season, Bentley will take a 2-1 overall record (1-1 NE-10) on the road for a 6 pm game at Stonehill College next Saturday.
