Fast Start Propels Rollins to 8-5 Win over Bentley

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Rollins College Tars jumped out to a 5-0 lead with two runs in the first and three in the second and went on to defeat the Bentley University Falcons 8-5 in non-conference baseball Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium. It was the second straight day Rollins prevailed by that identical score.

Junior left fielder Luke Reidy (Brentwood, Tenn.) and graduate first baseman Jake Rolly (Winter Springs, Fla.) had back-to-back RBI singles for Rollins in the first inning. The two combined for 16 hits in the four-game series with Rolly 9-for-13 with six RBI and Ready 7-for-16.

Reidy was also involved in the second-inning scoring for Rollins as he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Bentley, 0-4 during the four-game season-opening series, got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Senior shortstop Chris Hopkins (Malden, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) doubled to left, scoring freshman DH Tim Zupkus (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross HS) who led off the inning with a walk.

In the sixth, Bentley drew within one run, 5-4, by scoring three times. The inning included Hopkins' second RBI double of the afternoon and an RBI single to right by senior catcher Christopher Butler (Danvers, Mass./BB&N).

After Rollins (7-3) went up 6-4 with a run in the sixth, Bentley again drew within one in the eighth. Senior left fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton, Mass./Taunton HS) doubled to right center, moved to third on a fly ballot center by Hopkins and scored on a ground out.

The Tars picked up a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth with back-to-back bases-loaded walks.

Bentley had its best hitting game of the series, finishing with 11 hits including two apiece from Fugueira, Butler and junior Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS) as well as Hopkins.

Bentley will return to the Sunshine State Feb.28-Mar. 1 for a game against Stonehill and three against Chestnut Hill.
