WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior third baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) and sophomore shortstop Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS/Worcester Academy) combined for 12 hits, nine RBI and eight runs scored as Bentley University swept Saint Anselm College, 14-1 and 9-1, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Sunday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Pierce, who had four hits and five RBI in the nightcap, was 6-for-11 with six RBI in the two games. Halloran had three hits in both and finished with six runs scored, including four in the opener and two in game two.

The sweep lifted Bentley to 16-20 overall and 10-6 in the division. Saint Anselm (6-31, 1-15 Northeast) saw its losing streak hit 15.

In addition to solid hitting, the Falcons received quality pitching from starters Evan Christopulos (Andover/Andover HS) and Paul Frisoli (Watertown/Arlington Catholic HS). Christopulos, a sophomore right-hander, pitched eight innings in the opener and allowed nine hits and an unearned run while striking out a half-dozen. Frisoli, a senior righty, went the distance in game two and struck out a career-high 11 during a four-hitter.

The opener saw junior center fielder Max Troiani (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon HS) hit a two-run homer in the fourth and senior designated hitter Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) do the same in the seventh to make it an 8-1 game. It was the eighth of the year for Troiani and fifth for Grover.

Bentley, which batted first since the games were scheduled to be played on the road, added to its lead with two more in the eight and a four-run ninth.

Eight of the nine Falcons scored runs, including junior first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/ Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) with three.

Pierce, with an RBI single, gave Bentley a 1-0 lead two batters into the second game. In the fifth, he came through again, this time with a two-run single to make it 3-0. Later in the game, he had an RBI single in the seventh and a run-producing double in the ninth.

Graduate student Mike Samko (Arlington/BB&N) had two of his three hits in the second game and in the process, moved into the top ten in program history with 192 career.

Junior right fielder Luke Fordiani (Taunton/Taunton HS) tied a school record in game two by getting hit by a pitch three times

The two teams are scheduled to complete their three game series Monday afternoon at Saint Anselm (3:30 pm).
