No. 4 Southern New Hampshire Avoids Sweep with 2-0 Win over Bentley University
MANCHESTER, N.H. – Bentley University's attempt to sweep No. 4 Southern New Hampshire University was denied by the pitching of graduate right-hander Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn.) as the Penmen blanked the visiting Falcons, 2-0, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Tuesday afternoon at Penmen Field.
Bentley, which dropped to 8-5 in divisional play after having its five-game winning streak halted, had won the first two games of the series, 5-2 and 4-3.
Walkinshaw, a perfect 6-0 on the season, needed less than 100 pitches during his complete game three-hitter. He walked two, struck out six and didn't allow a base runner past second.
Bentley also received quality pitching from junior right-hander Lloyd Hill (Milton, Mass./Milton HS) and sophomore reliever Jimmy Hodgson (Newton/Newton North HS). Hill pitched the first six, Hodgson the final two and both gave up three hits and a run. Hill had two walks and two strikeouts while lowering his ERA to 2.01, and Hodgson fanned one.
SNHU took the lead on a one-out homer to left by junior second baseman Joshua Goldstein (Haverhill, Mass.).
The Penmen (29-10, 10-3 Northeast) added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by sophomore first baseman Sam Henrie (Middleboro, Mass.).
Bentley, 14-19 overall, will host Merrimack Wednesday at DeFelice Field.
