Figueira, Halloran Help Bentley to Game 1 Win; Southern Connecticut Turns Table in Game 2

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior left fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton/Taunton HS) hit his sixth homer and sophomore shortstop Kyle Halloran (Hopkinton/Hopkinton HS) had a pair of run-producing doubles as the Bentley University Falcons captured game one from Southern Connecticut State University, 11-6, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Sunday afternoon on DeFelice Field.

Southern Connecticut turned the tables in the second game, scoring five runs in the final two inning for a 10-5 victory.

In game one, Bentley put three up on the scoreboard in the second and added two more in the third for a 5-0 lead. Halloran opened the scoring with a double to left center, junior catcher Chris Butler (Danvers/BB&N) scored on a ground out and an RBI double by junior third baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) made it 3-0.

Figueira homered to right center to open the third and Halloran repeated his second inning double to make it 5-0.

After the Owls scored three to draw within two, Bentley had two more three-run innings. The Falcons made it 8-3 in the fifth and closed out the scoring with three more in the seventh after the Owls drew within two at 8-6. Two of the seventh-inning runs scored on a double by Figueira.

Junior DH Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) had three of Bentley's 14 hits and the Falcons also had two from graduate second baseman Mike Samko (Arlington/BB&N), Figueira, Halloran and junior right fielder Gino Fordiani (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS).

Sophomore right hander Evan Christopulos (Andover/Andover HS) struck out six in 5.1 innings and earned his second win of the season. Classmate Ronald Orie III (Sandy Spring, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel HS)) closed out the game with two no-hit innings of relief.              

Game two started on a positive note for the Falcons with a 4-1 lead after two innings. Two of the four were scored by junior center fielder Max Troiani (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon HS), who reached on a single and an error.

After falling behind, Bentley tied the game at 5-all when Troiani scored on Pierce's single to left in the seventh.

Southern Connecticut (12-18, 306 NE10) regained the lead with two runs in their next at bat and three more in the ninth.

Southern's 14 hits included three from both senior shortstop Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) and junior catcher Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.). DeMartino also had a double, two runs scored and two RBI.

Troiani and Pierce both had two hits for Bentley (9-16, 6-5 NE10).

The Falcons will continue a nine-game homestand Wednesday with a 3:30 game against Merrimack College.
