WALTHAM, Mass. – Juniors Lloyd Hill (Milton/Milton HS) and Will Rossiter (Granite Springs, N.Y./ Kennedy Catholic HS) combined on a four-hit shutout to lead Bentley University to a 1-0 game two victory over the University of New Haven, 1-0, and a split of a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday on DeFelice Field.

New Haven (9-11, 3-3 NE10) broke a 5-5 game one deadlock with three runs in the eighth and earned an 8-6 victory.

In a game that saw the two teams combine for 19 runners left on base, the only run of the nightcap was scored in the sixth inning. Grad student and second baseman Mike Samko (Arlington/ BB&N) led off with a single through the right side and moved to second on a passed ball. Senior first baseman Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) drove him in with a double to right.

That proved to be enough for the two Falcon pitchers, though just barely. With two outs in the ninth. Senior designated Dylan Grzenda (North Attleboro) kept the Chargers alive with a single to right and senior second baseman James Myers (Smithtown, N.Y.) followed with a walk.

Freshman shortstop Noah Budzik (Cromwell, Conn.) singled to second with the ball trickling off Samko's glove. Grzenda attempted to score from second, but Samko recovered and gunned him down at the plate for the final out.

Hill, a lefty who is coming off Tommy John surgery, pitched the first five innings and allowed two hits and two walks while fanning five. Rossiter, a righty, earned his third win of the season with four solid innings of relief. He gave up two hits and three walks, and struck out four.

In game one, New Haven's three-run eighth featured a-1n RBI single by Myers and a two-run single from junior third baseman Billy Huber (Smithtown, N.Y.). Bentley got one run back in the bottom half of the inning when junior left fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton/Taunton HS) scored on a wild pitch but could draw no closer.

The Falcons (8-15, 5-4 NE10) had 11 hits in the game, including two apiece from junior designated hitter Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS), Figueira and junior right fielder Gino Fordiani (Sudbury/ Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS).  

Huber was 4-for-5 for New Haven and sophomore DH Rob Giovanelli (Manhasset, N.Y.) drove in three runs for the visitors.

Seven Falcons had at least one hit in each game with both Figueira and Berardino each enjoying a three-hit afternoon.

Bentley, 8-5 in its last 13 games, will be back on DeFelice Sunday with a noon doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State.
