Two in the First Propels Bridgeport Past Bentley, 3-1

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Bridgeport Purple Knights scored twice in the top of the first and went on to post a 3-1 win over Bentley University in non-conference baseball Sunday afternoon at the University of Tampa Baseball Stadium.

The two runs were scored without a hit being involved. After the first two batters for Bridgeport (1-7) reached on an error, there was a sacrifice, a balk, a walk and a wild pitch.

Bentley's only run of the afternoon was scored in the bottom of the third. Senior designated hitter Austin Farry (Watertown, Mass./Watertown HS) led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second and scored on a single to center by grad student Mike Samko (Arlington, Mass./BB&N).

The game's scoring was completed in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Bridgeport senior center fielder Eamon Catherina (Ridgefield, N.J.).

Bentley managed only two hits off a pair of Bridgeport pitchers, sophomore righty Anthony Martino (West Sayville, N.Y.) and senior lefty Chris Martucci (Ridgefield, N.J.). Martino struck out eight in his seven innings and Martuccio two in his two.

The Falcons, 0-10, received five shutout innings of relief, including three from junior Will Rossiter (Granite Springs, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic HS).

The two teams will return to Tampa for three more games this against Bridgeport this week, beginning Monday at 1 pm.
