4-Run 3rd Propels Assumption Past Bentley, 7-2

LAKE BRANTLEY, Fla. – Assumption senior designated hitter Trevor McQuade (Westwood, Mass.) had a two-run single during a four-run third inning and the Greyhounds went on to post a 7-2 victory over Bentley University in the first of a three-game non-conference baseball series at Lake Brantley High School Friday afternoon.

The Greyhounds, who outhit Bentley 11-4, improved to 4-0 while Bentley remained winless seven games into the season.

Assumption junior second baseman Jared Brescia (Brentwood, N.H.) led off the bottom of the third with a home run to left. Following two hits and a walk, McQuade made it a 3-0 game with a two-run single through the right side. Later in the inning, junior catcher Derek Adamson (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored the Hounds' fourth run on a ground out.

Bentley broke up the shutout and no-hit bid in the bottom of the fifth. Junior first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) led off with a single to center. Following two groundouts, a single to left by junior third baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS) plated Berardino and got the Falcons on the board. Pierce had two of the Falcons' four hits.

Assumption built on its lead with two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth. In the eighth, junior third baseman Matt Lonardo (Cranston, R.I.) had an RBI single and Adamson drew a bases-loaded walk. Lonardo was also involved in the ninth-inning scoring with another RBI single.

In the bottom of the ninth, Bentley junior center fielder Max Troiani (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon HS) led off with a double and eventually scored on a balk.

Adamson, batting out of the clean-up slot in the order, had three hits for Assumption.

The Hounds received a strong effort off the mound from sophomore righty Cole Chudoba (Oxford, Conn.), who limited the Falcons to three hits and one run in eight innings of work. He didn't issue a walk and struck out nine.

Bentley received four quality innings of relief from junior right-hander Will Rossiter (Granite Springs, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic HS), who struck out four and allowed just one hit.

The series will continue Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
