Troiani Leads Off with Homer, but Bentley Drop Rain-Shortened Opener to Palm Beach Atlantic

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Bentley University junior center fielder Max Troiani (Pittsford, N.Y./ Pittsford Mendon HS) led off the season with a home run to left but Palm Beach Atlantic University countered with four runs in the bottom of the first and went on to record a 5-2 rain-shortened win in season-opening non-conference baseball Friday night at Rubin Field. The game was called after six-and-a-half innings.

That bottom of the first saw the Sailfish score four despite only one hit off Bentley senior right-hander Luke Dawson (Stamford, Conn./Westhill HS). A walk, a throwing error, a wild pitch and a passed ball accounted for the tying run. After a walk and a hit batter, another wild pitch brought in the second run and an RBI single by junior left fielder Andreas Papageorge (Pleasanton, Calif.) made it 3-1 win. Later in the frame, a fourth run scored on a ground out.

Palm Beach Atlantic added to its lead in the third inning on an RBI single by junior center fielder Schwimer (Port Saint Lucie, Fla.).

Bentley's second run scored in the sixth inning, Following back-to-back singles by senior right fielder Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) and sophomore first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury HS), Grover scored on an error.

Bentley received solid relief from senior Ryan Corriveau (Milton, N.H./Nute HS), who pitched the third, fourth and fifth innings. He scattered four hits, allowed one run and struck out a pair.

The winning pitcher was senior righty Mitchell Carroll (Coral Springs, Fla.), who yielded only two hits in five innings of work. He walked two and struck out six.

Bentley's season-opening weekend will continue with a 1:00 game at Lynn University Saturday.
