Dawson Named Northeast-10 & NCBWA Division II Pitcher of the Week

WALTHAM, Mass. – Following a two-hit shutout against Assumption College, Bentley University junior right-hander Luke Dawson (Stamford, Conn./Westhill HS) has been named the Pitcher of the Week in the Northeast-10 Conference. He was also recognized as the Division II East Region Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Dawson carried a no-hitter into the seventh before it was broken up with a double to deep center. He also gave up a one-out single in the ninth before closing out the 15-0 victory with his 10th and 11th strikeouts, both on called third strikes.

It was the second straight shutout for Dawson, who blanked St. Michael's College by the count of 12-0 a week earlier. It was also the third consecutive game he's had 10 or more strikeouts, following 10 against Pace University and 12th against St. Michael's.

Dawson, who has a five-game winning streak, lowered his ERA to 2.51 and remained number one in the NE10 in strikeouts with 80. That's just ten shy of Bill Sullivan's school record, set last spring.

Also recognized by the conference, with selection to the NE10 Weekly Honor Roll, was senior infielder Mike Samko (Arlington/BB&N).

In a 2-2 week, Samko batted .385 (5-13) with seven runs scored and six RBI. His on base percentage as the Falcons' lead-off man was .571 and his stat line also included five walks, two hit by pitch, a sacrifice fly and a .941 fielding percentage. In a three-game series with Assumption, Samko reached base ten times in 16 plate appearances.

Samko leads the team in hitting (.371) and on base percentage (.452) as well as hits (49), runs (31) and RBI (28).

Bentley, 17-14 overall and 7-5 NE10 Northeast, returns to action Tuesday at Stonehill. That game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was moved to a day earlier due to weather concerns.
