Samko Leads Bentley to Game 1 Victory; Assumption Comes Back to Take Nightcap

WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior second baseman Mike Samko (Arlington/BB&N), who extended his streak of consecutive games reaching base to 25, had two hits, two runs scored, three RBI and a pair of walks as Bentley University topped Assumption College, 11-6, in the opening game of a Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Assumption came back to take the nightcap, scoring four times in the ninth to claim a 10-6 victory.

Bentley started fast in the opener, scoring in each of the first five innings, including three runs in each of the first two. The first inning saw the Falcons score three without benefit of a hit as they took advantage of two walks and a Greyhound error.

Samko, 5-for-10 with six runs and six RBI in the three-game series, drove in two with a single through the right side in the second. Junior right fielder Austin Farry (Watertown/Watertown HS) scored Bentley's sixth run off a double play.

Graduate catcher Nathan Littman (Abington/Abington HS) had an RBI double in the third, sophomores Max Troiani (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon HS) and Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/ Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) each drove in a run in the fourth and Samko had an RBI single to center during a two-run fifth.

Matching Samko's two hits were Littman, Farry and sophomore shortstop Chris Hopkins (Malden/Malden Catholic HS). Junior righty Ryan Corriveau (Milton, N.H./Nute HS) earned the win, his third in as many decisions this season, with four innings of relief in which he allowed five hits and three runs.

Bentley, looking to sweep the three-game series, scored twice in the first and single runs in the next two innings to take a 4-2 lead after three frames of game two. Berardino picked up an RBI in the first, Samko had a sacrifice fly in the second and junior first baseman Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) drove his fifth home run over the center fielder fence in the third.

After the Greyhounds scored four in the top of the fifth to go back in front, Berardino and Grover both drew bases-loaded walks in the bottom half of the inning, evening the contest at 6-6.

It stayed that way until the ninth when Assumption erupted for four. Senior left fielder Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy) led off with a double, sophomore catcher Derek Adamson (Dalton) beat out a bunt single and junior shortstop Hunter Tralli (Berlin, Conn.) was walked intentionally, loading the bases.

Senior first baseman Jake Byrne (Grafton) cleared them with a triple to right center and tacked on an insurance run when he scored on a sacrifice fly.

Bentley, outhit 13-8, received three hits from Troiani.

Junior Mike Keinz (North Branford, Conn.) earned the win with five innings of two-hit scoreless relief. He issued the two bases-loaded walks the fifth, to the first two batters he faced, but struck out sx the rest of the way.

Bentley, which had won eight of nine before dropping game two, finished the day 17-14 overall and 7-5 in the Northeast Division. The Falcons are in fourth, a half-game6- back of Assumption (17-21-1, 8-5 Northeast) and a half-game ahead of Merrimack (6-5 Northeast).

After 13 in a row at home, Bentley will play its next four on the road, beginning Wednesday at Stonehill.
