Stonehill Rides 2 Early Runs to 2-1 Victory over Bentley

BROOKLINE, Mass. -- Junior third baseman William Kelleher (Mansfield) drove in runs in both the first and third innings, propelling Stonehill College to a 2-1 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Wednesday afternoon at Northeastern University's Friedman Diamond.

Following a single by senior center fielder Tyler Carey (Raynham) and a hit batter, Kelleher made it a 1-0 game with a two-out single to center.

The Skyhawks (8-7, 1-0 NE10 Northeast) made it a 2-0 game in the third with senior left fielder Alex Hurley (Rumford, R.I.) scoring on Kelleher's double down the left field line.

Bentley had a number of scoring opportunities, stranding nine on base, but only scored in the fifth. Sophomore third baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) was hit by a pitch, move to third on a failed pickoff attempt by the catcher and scored on an infield single by senior second baseman Mike Samko (Arkington/BB&N).

The Falcons (8-10, 0-1 NE10 Northeast) left runners in scoring position in four innings, including the ninth when senior Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield) came in for a game-ending strikeout.

Bentley, outhit 8-7, received 5.2 innings of scoreless relief from junior right-handers Daniel Riley (Mansfield/Xaverian Bros. HS) and Ryan Corriveau (Milton, N.H./Nute HS). Riley allowed one hit and struck out five in 3.2 innings, and Corriveau yielded two hits in two innings of work.

Bentley is scheduled to open its home schedule with a three-game series with Southern New Hampshire on DeFelice Field this weekend with game one slated for 3:30 pm Friday.
