Samko, Berardino Combine for 5 RBI as Bentley Wins 3rd Straight, 7-3 over Assumption

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Senior second baseman Mike Samko (Arlington, Mass./BB&N) and sophomore first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) combined for five RBI as Bentley University stretched its winning streak to three with a 7-3 victory over Assumption College Wednesday at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

Samko had three hits, three RBI and a run scored while Berardino finished with two RBI and two doubles.

The victory went to freshman right-hander Gary Farnham (Bangor, Maine/Bangor HS) following five quality innings of relief. He scattered four singles and allowed only one unearned run to gain his first win as a collegian.

Bentley jumped out in front in the bottom of the second with three unearned runs. Junior DH Austin Farry (Watertown, Mass./Watertown HS) scored on a two-out error and Samko drove in both sophomore shortstop Chris Hopkins (Malden, Mass./Malden Catholic HS) and sophomore catcher Christopher Butler (Danvers, Mass./BB&N) with a single to center.

After Assumption (3-6) scored twice in the third to end the a string of 24.1 consecutive scoreless innings thrown by Bentley pitchers, the Falcons got one run back in the bottom of that inning. Sophomore center fielder Max Troiani (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon HS), who saw his eight-game hitting streak halted, walked, stole second and scored on a single by Farry.

Butler reached on a bunt single and scored in the fourth, making it a 5-2 game. The Falcons completed the game's scoring in the sixth on an RBI single by Samko and an RBI double by Berardino.

The top three in the Falcon order were a combined 7-for-14 with graduate catcher Nathan Littman (Abington, Mass./Abington HS) 2-for-4, Samko 3-for-5 and Berardino 2-for-4. Butler scored three times and also had two hits for the Falcons.

Bentley (4-6 overall, 3-1 vs. East Region) will wrap up this trip to the Sunshine State Thursday with an 11 am game against Concordia (N.Y.) at Rollins.
