WORCESTER, Mass. – A nine-run second inning that featured 11 hits propelled Assumption College to an early 10-0 lead and the Greyhounds went on to record a 14-2 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Sunday afternoon at Rocheleau Field.

The Greyhounds totaled 22 hits with seven different players going for two or more. At the top of the list were senior first baseman Jake Byrne (Grafton), who finished 4-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI, and sophomore center fielder Alex Richardson (Rehoboth), with four RBI on two hits.

The big second inning for the Hounds saw 11 of the first 12 batters reach safely. Richardson was 2-for-2 with three RBI in the second, freshman right fielder R.J. Libby (Middleton) had a two-run double and four other players had an RBI in the inning.

Assumption, which finished its season at 17-25 overall and 8-13 in the Northeast Division, added to its lead with single runs in the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings.

In addition to the four his from Byrne, Libby, junior third baseman Mike Schmidt (Jackson, N.J.) and senior  left fielder Kevin O'Connor (Leominster) had three hits for the Hounds.

Bentley scored its only runs in the top of the sixth. Sophomore left fielder Gino Fordiani (Sudbury/ Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS)  led off with a single up the middle and freshman first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) followed with a walk. Two outs and a fielder's choice later, freshman catcher Christopher Butler (Danvers/BB&N) got the Falcons on the scoreboard with a two-run single to center.

Bentley totaled only six hits with freshman Max Troiani (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon HS) the only Falcon with more than one.

Reaping the benefits of the potent Assumption attack were senior right-hander Danny Hoffer (Yonkers, N.Y.), who notched his first win of the season, and junior righty Tom Hortstkotte (Milford), who collected the save. Hoffer allowed four hits and the two runs in six innings of work, and Horstkotte gave up two hits and struck out four in three scoreless innings.

Bentley (11-29, 9-12 Northeast) will be back on the road Tuesday, playing at top-seeded and nationally-ranked Southern New Hampshire in the first round of the Northeast-10 Championships (6 pm).
