Franklin Pierce Sweeps Bentley, 2-1 & 12-5; 4 Hits Apiece for Matheson & Pierce

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior designated hitter Stephen Octave (New Windsor, N.Y.) had six hits and five RBI, including four of each in the nightcap, and junior right fielder Adam Chase (Bridgewater) doubled four times in the second game as Franklin Pierce University swept a Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball doubleheader from Bentley University, 2-1 and 12-5, Saturday at DeFelice Field.

The opener was a pitchers' duel between Bentley senior lefty Evan Walsh (Arlington/Arlington Catholic HS) and Raven senior righty Cody McPartland (Sound Beach, N.Y.). McParland stayed undefeated, improving to 6-0, and lowered his ERA to 2.32 after scattering nine hits and striking out eight. Walsh struck out five while giving up eight hits and three walks.

Franklin Pierce grabbed the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Junior third baseman John Friday (Southborough) reached on a fielder's choice, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Octave's single up the middle.

The Ravens added to their lead in the fifth on a bases-loaded single to right by junior first baseman Dalton Davis (Birmingham, Ala.).

Bentley got one back in the last of the sixth. Junior third baseman Peter Bocchino (Saugus/ Governors' Academy) led off with a single to center, was sacrificed to second and scored on a single to right by freshman center fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton/Taunton HS).

The Falcons threatened in the ninth, getting two on before McPartland finished it with a grounder back to the mound.

Freshman second baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) had three hits for Bentley and junior catcher Luke Matheson (Yarmouth Port/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS) had two. Each finished the doubleheader with four hits.

Game two saw Bentley climb out of an early 3-0 hole to take a 5-4 lead after four. The Falcons cut it to 3-2 in the second on a sacrifice fly by sophomore right fielder Austin Farry (Watertown/ Watertown HS) and an RBI single through the left side by senior shortstop Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./Amity Reg. HS).

In the fourth, Bentley struck for three runs, doing all the damage after two were out. Farry scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch and Matheson followed with a two-run single to center.

Franklin Pierce regained the lead with three runs in the sixth and broke it open with two in the eighth and another three-run inning in the ninth.  The Ravens (28-12, 14-4 NE10 Northeast) pounded out 21 hits with junior center fielder Harrison Smolske (Burlington) joining Chase and Octave in the four-hit club.

Despite being swept in the three-game series by Franklin Pierce, Bentley (9-26) remained in the lead for their final playoff berth out of the Northeast Division with five games left. The Falcons have a 7-9 divisional record, Stonehill follows at 7-10 and Assumption is 6-11.

Bentley will play its final five on the road, beginning Monday at Merrimack (3:30 pm).
