Bentley Pulls Out 5-4 12-Inning Win over Merrimack; Warriors Rally for 2-1 Win in 2nd Game

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior catcher Liam Matheson (Yarmouth Port/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS) lined an RBI single over the left fielder's head to give Bentley University a 5-4 12-inning win over Merrimack College in a Northeast-10 Conference baseball game that had been played on three different days and on two different fields.

The two teams also met in a rescheduled game from 15 days ago with Merrimack (19-16, 11-3 NE10 Northeast) scoring twice in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 2-1 win at DeFelice Field and hand the Falcons their seventh one-run loss of the spring.

Matheson's game-winner broke a tie that had been in place since darkness halted the game on Mar. 30 at Bentley with the score tied at 4-4 following 11 innings. The two teams resumed the contest on Apr. 12 at Merrimack but only for three outs before rain forced another delay.

Freshman pinch-hitter Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) began the resumption with a single to right center. Sophomore right fielder Austin Farry (Watertown/ Watertown HS) sacrificed him to second and he took third on a ground out. Following an intentional walk, Matheson gave the Falcons the walk-off win.

Grad student Bill Sullivan (Carver/Carver HS) earned the win without having to throw a pitch on Thursday. The right-hander and NE10 innings leader gave the Falcons three scoreless innings on Mar. 30 after Bentley battled back to tie the game, and pitched a 1-2-3 12th inning on Apr. 12. The victory was his fifth of the season.

In the second game of the afternoon, Sullivan carried a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning. After getting the first out and issuing a walk, he was lifted for sophomore Ryan Corriveau (Milton, N.H./ Nute HS). Following a single and a fly out, a two-out RBI single up the middle by junior center fielder Tyler Lyne (Agawam) knotted the score a 1-1.

Corriveau got the following batter, freshman third baseman Joey Porricelli (Monroe, Conn.) to ground to short, but the throw could not be handled, allowing pinch-hitter Aidan O'Leary (Portsmouth, N.H.) to score the game-winning run.

Bentley (9-23, 7-6 NE10 Northeast) had held a 1-0 lead since the second inning. Farry led off with a single to left and eventually scored when a throw home with the bases loaded was mishandled.

Both teams had nine hits in the low-scoring game with Farry, junior left fielder Nick Neshe (Waltham/Waltham HS) and freshman second baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) having two for the Falcons.

Sullivan, in his 8.1 innings of work, scattered seven singles, walked three and struck out two.

Bentley will remain at home for a three-game series with Franklin Pierce, beginning with a single game Friday at 3:30 pm. The two clubs will also play a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
