Saint Anselm Strikes Late for 5-4 Win over Bentley

MANCHESTER, N.H. – A five-run eighth inning erased a 4-0 Falcon lead and propelled Saint Anselm College to a 5-4 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball at Sullivan Park Thursday afternoon.

The Hawks, limited to four hits by grad student and right-hander Bill Sullivan (Carver/Carver HS) through 7.1 innings, strung together five straight hits in the eighth to chase Sullivan from the game. An RBI single by junior first baseman Shaine Carpenter (Florham, Park, N.J.) got the Hawks on the board and a two-run single by junior left fielder John Marculitis (Shrewsbury, Mass.) made it a 4-3 game.

After a pitching change, Saint Anselm (8-18, 2-5 NE10 Northeast) tied the game on a wild pitch. Senior right fielder Jon McQuarrie (Salem, N.H.) followed with a sacrifice fly, scoring Marculitis with the go-ahead run.

Bentley took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back RBI doubles by sophomore right fielder Austin Farry (Watertown, Mass./Watertown HS) and freshman center fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton, Mass./Taunton HS).

Sophomore first baseman Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) made it 3-0 with an RBI single in the second and the Falcons added their final run in the fourth when junior catcher Liam Matheson (Yarmouth Port, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth HS) scored on an error after reaching on a single to left.

Bentley's ten hits included three by Matheson and two apiece from Grover and Figueira. Sullivan, in his 7.1 innings of work, struck out nine and walked two.

Junior righthy Adam Krol (Sunderland, Mass.) gained the win for Saint Anselm with a complete game effort. He walked four and struck out seven.

The two teams will also play at Saint Anselm on Saturday and Monday, with both games scheduled for 1 pm.
