Saint Rose Rallies Late to Complete Doubleheader Sweep of Bentley

WALTHAM, Mass. – After staging a two-out rally in the top of the ninth to score the tying run, The College of Saint Rose erupted for four runs in the tenth to earn a 12-8 game two victory and complete a sweep of Bentley University in a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

In the opener, the Golden Knights used a pair of three-run innings to best the Falcons, 6-1.

Saint Rose, which faced deficits of 4-0, 6-2 and 8-7 in the nightcap, stayed alive on an infield single by freshman right fielder Anthony Scheller (Holbrook, N.Y.) with two outs in the ninth. Junior center fielder Matt McKinnon (Bluepoint, N.Y.) followed with a double to right center, evening the contest at eight all.

Bentley threatened in the bottom of the ninth as an error and a hit batter gave the Falcons two on with no out. However, winning pitcher Caleb Gregg (Chatham, N.Y.) escaped trouble with a strikeout and a double play, sending the game to the tenth where his teammates delivered. An infield dribbler with the bases loaded scored junior first baseman Joe Foran (Fort Ann, N.Y.) with the go-ahead run and Scheller made it a three-run difference with a two-run single. McKinnon pushed the differential to four with an RBI single.

Bentley's 14 hits included four, in as many at bats, from sophomore left fielder Gino Fordiani (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS). He drove in three runs, scored another and also reached base two other times (walk, hit by pitch).

After the Golden Knights had tied the game at 7-7, the Falcons regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single by sophomore right fielder Austin Farry (Watertown/Watertown HS).

Freshman designated hitter Ryan Berardino (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) had three hits and freshman second baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater/East Bridgewater HS) helped out with two hits, a run and an RBI.

Saint Rose (3-18, 2-6 NE10) matched Bentley in the hit column with McKinnon, Foran and Scheller all having three.

In the opener, the visitors took the lead with three runs in the third inning. McKinnon had a two-run single and freshman second baseman Andrew Pedone (Clifton Park, N.Y.) provided a sacrifice fly. The Knights doubled their lead in the sixth, the first two scoring on a triple by senior DH Joe DeLuca (Cicero, N.Y.).

The only Bentley run of the opener came in the seventh when freshman center fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton/Taunton HS) tripled and scored on a Pierce single.

The Falcons were outhit 10-7 with three of Bentley's coming from Farry.

Bentley (5-18-1, 3-5-1 NE10) returns to action Wednesday at Merrimack.
