Late Run Lifts Stonehill Past Bentley, 5-4

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore first baseman Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Conn.) tripled and scored in the top of the eighth to break a 4-4 tie and lift Stonehill College to a 5-4 win over Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Monday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

It was the fifth one-run loss of the season for the Falcons, who overcame an early 3-0 deficit and pounded out 13 hits with five different players having a pair.

Stonehill (7-13, 2-1 NE10 Northeast) capitalized on two Bentley errors to score twice in the top of the first and made it a 3-0 game on an RBI single by sophomore left fielder Patrick Downey (Cheshire, Conn.) in the second.

Bentley got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Sophomore left fielder Gino Fordiani (Sudbury/Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) reached on a single to short right, took second on a wild pitch and scored when the throw from the catcher went into the outfield, where it was misplayed.

After an errant throw on a stolen base allowed Stonehill to score its third unearned run of the day in the sixth, Bentley tied the game in its next at bat. Three straight singles, on consecutive pitches, to left by junior DH Nick Neshe (Waltham/Waltham HS), sophomore right fielder Austin Farry (Watertown/Watertown HS) and junior third baseman Peter Bocchino (Danvers/Governors Academy) loaded the bases with no outs.

After a strikeout, a two-run single by junior catcher Liam Matheson (Yarmouth Port/Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS) brought the Falcons within one. Freshman center fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton/Taunton HS) followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing in Bocchino with the tying run.

It stayed 4-4 until the eighth. Sabo tripled to right and scored when senior shortstop Steve Lee (Braintree) singled past a drawn-in infield.

Bentley (2-16-1, 0-1-1 NE10 Northeast) had two on and two out in the bottom of the ninth before winning pitcher Patrick Hurley (Roslindale) got a game-ending grounder to second.

Farry, Bocchino, Fordiani and Matheson all had two hits for Bentley, as did senior shortstop Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS) who ran his hitting streak to 11.

Hurley recorded the win after limiting the Falcons to two hits in three scoreless innings. Sophomore right-hander Luke Dawson (Stamford, Conn./Westhill HS), the second of five Falcon pitchers, was the most effective. He gave up only one hit and struck out two in his two innings of work.

Bentley's seven-game homestand is due to resume Friday with the first of a three-game series with St. Michael's College.
