Farry & Pierce Drive in 2 Apiece, but Bentley Falls to Assumption, 7-5

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Despite two RBI apiece from sophomore right fielder Austin Farry (Watertown/Watertown HS) and freshman second baseman Jake Pierce (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater HS), the Bentley University baseball team dropped a 7-5 decision to Assumption College in non-conference action Tuesday at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

Assumption put up a four on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth to extend a one-run lead to 6-1. The Greyhounds (6-4) had only one hit in the inning, a lead-off single up the middle by sophomore right fielder Kevin Quinlivan (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Two hit batters moved him to third and he scored on a bases loaded walk.  A pair of wild pitches each brought in a run for the Greyhounds and the final run of the inning scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman DH RJ Libby (Middleton, Mass.).

After Assumption added a single run in the sixth, Bentley got back in the game with a four-run bottom half of the sixth. Sophomore first baseman Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) hit an RBI triple down the right field line and scored on Farry's grounder to short. Following a single by junior third baseman Peter Bocchino (Saugus, Mass./Governors Academy) and a double to left center by junior DH Nick Neshe (Waltham, Mass./Waltham HS), Pierce drove in both with a single through the right side.

Bentley (1-8) threatened in the bottom of the ninth with an error and a walk giving the Falcons two on and no outs. However, sophomore Colton King (Westerly, R.I.) completed three innings of scoreless relief for Assumption with a strikeout, a pop-up and a fly ball to center.

Bentley's nine hits included two apiece from Bocchino and senior shortstop Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS). Ashworth doubled scored the Falcons' first run of the game in the fourth on a sac fly by Farry. Assumption also had nine hits with Quinlivan one of three players with two hits.

The Falcons received two innings of quality relief  from senior David Rivera (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore HS) and one inning from sophomore Daniel Riley (Mansfield, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS).

Bentley will be back at Alfond Wednesday with an 11 am contest against Saint Anselm.
