4-Run 7th Inning Lifts Rollins to 7-6 Win over Bentley; 3 Hits for Falcons’ Abramson

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Back-to-back triples by senior catcher Christopher Corbett (Stokesdale, N.C.) and senior center fielder Peter Nicoletto (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) ignited a four-run seventh inning for Rollins College and the Tars went on to record a 7-6 win over Bentley University in non-conference college baseball Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.

Bentley, which suffered the loss despite a season-high 11 hits, twice came from behind to tie or take the lead before stranding the potential tying run on base in the ninth.

With the score even at 3-3, Corbett led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple down the right field line. Nicoletto hit the next pitch into right center, plating Corbett with the go-ahead run. Later in the inning, a two-run double by freshman right fielder Nick Santucci (Franklin, Mass.) made it a 7-3 game.

Bentley cut the deficit in half in the eighth, the inning beginning with sophomore right fielder Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill HS) getting hit by a pitch and freshman first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) reaching on a single. An RBI single by freshman shortstop Drew Abramson (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) brought in Grover and Berardino scored on a double play.

In the ninth, Falcon freshman center fielder Luke Figueira (Taunton, Mass./Taunton HS) led off with a single through the left side. A ground out and wild pitch put him on third, and he scored on a single through the left side by junior third baseman Peter Bocchino (Saugus, Mass./Governor's Academy). He was stranded there when Rollins freshman righty Garrett Leonard (Fort Mill. S.C.) got a pop-up for the game's final out.

Bentley took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the second inning, Grover and Abramson scoring when a fly ball to right was lost in the sun for a three-base error. The Falcon lead was short-lived as Rollins scored twice in the bottom of the second.

The Falcons tied the game up in the sixth when Grover doubled and scored on Berardino's single up the middle.

Bentley's 11 hits included three by Abramson and two apiece from Grover and Berardino. Rollins (7-2) finished with eight hits, including two by Santucci who also had three RBI.

Bentley, 0-6, will be back at Alfond Mar. 5 for the first of a five-game trip.
