Southern Connecticut Blanks Bentley, 9-0; Bocchino with 2 Hits for Falcons

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Making his season debut for the Owls, senior righty Cole Bryant (Newington, Conn.) authored a five-hit complete game shutout to lead Southern Connecticut State to a 9-0 win over Bentley University in non-conference college baseball Saturday afternoon at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

Bryant, who struck out six and didn't issue a walk, had the lead before throwing the first of his 103 pitches. Following singles by junior second baseman Ryan Kaplan (Fishkill, N.Y.) and sophomore left fielder Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.), senior third baseman Greg Zullo (Branford, Conn.) plated both with a two-out triple to center.

The Owls, who were making their season debut, broke it open with a five-run second inning that chased Falcon starter Evan Walsh (Arlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic HS). The inning included five hits, including a two-run single to right by Zullo, along with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Zullo, who stole home in the fourth after reaching base on a hit by pitch, capped his five-RBI, three-hit day with an RBI double in the ninth.

Bentley had three runners reach third, including junior third baseman Peter Bocchino (Saugus, Mass./ Governors Academy), whose two hits included a ninth-inning triple to left center.

The Falcons (0-5) received solid relief work from freshman righty Greg Johnson (North Reading, Mass./North Reading HS) and sophomore righty Ryan Corriveau (Milton, N.H./Nute HS). Johnson fanned three and allowed three hits and one run in 3.1 innings while Corriveau gave up two hits and struck out one in three scoreless innings.

Bentley will wrap up its three-game weekend trip to the Sunshine State Sunday with a noon game against Rollins.
