Rollins Blanks Bentley, 7-0; Berardino 2 Hits for Falcons

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Six-foot-seven righty Brad Case (Pelham N.Y.) and junior righty Brett Scafidi (Naples, Fla.) combined on a four-hit shutout as Rollins College improved to 5-2 with a 7-0 win over Bentley University in non-conference college baseball at Alfond Stadium Friday evening.

Case, now 3-0 on the season with 0.93 ERA, pitched the first seven innings for the Tars. He scattered three singles, issued three walks and struck out a half dozen. Scafidi came on for the final two innings and allowed one hit while striking out one.

Case received more than enough offensive support in the bottom of the first inning when Rollins scored twice. After two-out singles by senior first baseman Mike Purcell (Cheshire, Conn.) and senior catcher Christopher Corbett (Strokesdale, N.C.), senior center fielder Peter Nicoletto (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) plated both with a triple to left.

Junior second baseman Grant Ashline (Naples, Fla.) made it a 3-0 game when he left off the third with a home run to right.

Rollins pulled away with two runs in the sixth and single runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Junior DH Philip Burket (Winter Garden, Fla.) and sophomore shortstop Isaiah Russell (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had the RBIs in the sixth, Nicoletto drove in his third run of the game in the seventh and Corbet had an eighth-inning sacrifice fly.

Nicoletto and Russell each had three of Rollins' 13 hits.

For Bentley (0-4), freshman first baseman Ryan Berardino (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Reg. HS) was two-for-four.

Grad student and right-hander Bill Sullivan (Carver, Mass./Carver HS) started and took the loss for the Falcons. He allowed five runs and struck out five in his six innings of work.

Bentley will be back at Alfond on Saturday for an 11 am game with Southern Connecticut State.
