Top of Order Propels Bentley to Doubleheader Sweep of Saint Anselm

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore designated hitter Nick Neshe (Waltham/Waltham HS) had hits in his first seven at bats, sophomore third baseman Mike Samko (Arlington/BB&N) was 5-for-5 in game two with three RBI, and graduate student Mike Muir (Bridgewater/Xaverian Bros. HS) drove in three runs in each game as Bentley University swept Saint Anselm College, 9-5 and 13-0, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Saturday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

The doubleheader sweep gave Bentley its second 3-0 weekend of the season against the Hawks with the Falcons improving to 12-21 overall and 4-10 in the Northeast Division.

In the opener, Neshe was a perfect 5-for-5 with two runs and two RBI as he had singles in the first, second, fourth and eighth, and a double in the sixth. He combined with Samko and Muir for nine hits, seven RBI and four runs scored as the trio had a hand in all nine of Bentley's runs.

Down 3-2 midway through the second, Bentley scored twice in the bottom of the inning to take a lead it would not relinquish. After two singles and a fielder's choice resulted in runners on first and second, Samko drove in one with a double to left center. Neshe followed with a single to center, putting the Falcons in front 4-3.

Bentley added to its lead with three runs in the fourth with Samko (double), Neshe (single) and Muir (sacrifice fly) providing the RBIs. Neshe doubled and scored in the sixth, and Muir had his second sacrifice fly of the game in the eighth.

Bentley totaled 15 hits, including two apiece from Samko (2 RBI), Muir, senior shortstop Zachary Littman (Abington/Abington HS) (2 RBI) and senior catcher Bryan Rocha (Rehoboth/Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS) (2 runs scored). Freshman left fielder Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton HS) was 0-for-3 but scored three times.

Graduate student and right-hander Bill Sullivan (Carver/Carver HS) pitched the first seven innings to gain his fourth win of the season, and junior righty Jack Burke (Reading/St. John's Prep) provided two innings of scoreless relief for the save. Sullivan struck out five while allowing eight hits, five runs and four walks. Burke yielded two hits and struck out three.

Game two saw Bentley pound out 19 hits and put up a trip of four-run innings. The first of those big innings came in the second when the Falcons had six hits in a span of seven batters. Rocha and Samko both had RBI singles and Muir delivered the next two with a double to right. In the three-game weekend series, he had a total of nine RBI.

Junior shortstop Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS) had a two-run double and Samko a two-run single during a four-run fifth that made it 8-0. Grad student Ryan O'Connor (Newburyport/Newburyport HS) lost a ball in the right field bullpen in the sixth for his second homer of the season, and Bentley completed the scoring with four more runs in the seventh. That inning featured an RBI single by Samko, Muir's third sac fly of the twinbill and a two-run double to dead center by O'Connor.

Paul Frisoli (Watertown/Arlington Catholic HS) and Luke Dawson (Stamford, Conn./Westhill HS), a pair of freshman right-handers, combined on the shutout. Frisoli (2-3) gave up all four hits and struck out four while pitching the first seven, and Dawson fanned five of the six Hawks that he faced. Saint Anselm, which had only one runner reach third, was 0-for-10 with runners on base.

In addition to the five hits for Samko, Grover was 4-for-5 and O'Connor 3-for-5 in the nightcap against the Hawks (8-27, 3-11 NE-10 Northeast). Ashworth scored three times and Samko, Muir and O'Connor each had three RBI.

Next up for the Falcons is a home game against Stonehill Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
