Bridgeport Uses 20 Hits to Top Bentley, 20-5

TAMPA, Fla. – Senior third baseman Alnaydo Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) homered twice and drove in six during a four-hit afternoon as the University of Bridgeport defeated Bentley University, 20-5, in non-conference college baseball action Monday at the University of Tampa Stadium.

Rodriguez doubled in two runs during a four-run fourth inning, slugged a three-run blast to right during an eight-run fifth and also went deep, this time to center, in the sixth inning.

Lead-off hitter and left fielder Cam Overbaugh (Catskill, N.Y.) also had a big day at the plate for the 5-2-1 Purple Knights. He drove in four, including a bases-clearing bases-loaded double in the fifth.

Sophomore second baseman Bobby Schryver (Ansonia, Conn.) matched Rodriguez' four hits and was one of three Bridgeport players to score three times. He helped make it 5-0 after an inning-and-a-half with a two run triple in the second inning.

Junior righty Matt Van Riper (Elmwood Park, N.Y. was the beneficiary of the powerful offensive attack by his teammates as he earned his first win of the season following six innings of shutout pitching. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out six.

Bentley (4-8) got on the scoreboard with three runs in the seventh inning. After the first run scored on an error, sophomore designated hitter Nick Neshe (Waltham, Mass./Waltham HS) and center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS) picked up RBIs, on an infield single and a fielders' choice, respectively.

Bentley added two more runs in the ninth with sophomore catcher Liam Matheson (Yarmouth Port, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS) and Neshe crossing home plate. Matheson, who doubled, scored on a single by Muir, and Neshe came in on a fielders' choice hit by first baseman Ryan O'Connor (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport HS).

Bentley finished with six hits with Matheson the only one with two.

The two teams will conclude their four-game series Tuesday night at 7 pm at the UT Stadium.
