Bentley Drops 2nd Straight to Bridgeport, 13-4

TAMPA, Fla. -- Senior designated hitter Alnaydo Rodriguez (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a three-run homer in the second inning to propel the University of Bridgeport to a 13-4 win over Bentley University in non-conference college baseball Sunday afternoon at the University of Tampa Stadium.

The day started out on a positive note for the Falcons with two runs in the bottom of the first. Graduate student and center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS) had an RBI single, stole second and scored on an RBI double by another grad student, first baseman Ryan O'Connor (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport HS).

Bridgeport (4-2-1) more than answered in its next at-bat, exploding for six runs, including the blast over the right field fence by Rodriguez. Later in the inning, there was a two-run single by junior left fielder Cam Overbaugh (Catskill, N.Y.) and an RBI single by sophomore second baseman Jose Negron (New Haven, Conn.).

The Purple Knights had two more multi-run innings as they scored two in the fourth to make it 8-2 and four in the eighth for a 13-3 lead at the time.

Bentley (4-7) scored single runs in the fourth and eighth innings. In the fourth, sophomore DH Nick Neshe (Waltham, Mass./Waltham HS) led off with a single, moved to third on an error and came home on a ground out by sophomore third baseman Mike Samko (Arlington, Mass./BB&N). Neshe also scored after a lead-off single in the eighth. A walk and a wild pitch put him on third, and he was driven in by Samko with a single through the right side.

Bentley finished with 11 hits, including three by Neshe and two apiece from junior shortstop Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS) and freshmen Brandon Grover (Rocky Hill, Conn./ Rocky Hill HS).

For Bridgeport, their 19-hit attack included four by Overbaugh and three, along with three RBI, from Negron.

Game three of the four-game series with be played at 3:30 pm Monday and the two teams will wrap up the four-gamer Tuesday night at 7. Both of those games will also be played at the UT Stadium.
