Rollins Captures Rubber Game of Bentley Series, 20-1

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Senior designated hitter Michael Mahoney (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) drove in five runs and junior catcher Christopher Corbett (Stokesdale, N.C.) had four RBI, powering the Rollins College baseball team to a 20-1 win in the rubber game of its three-game series with Bentley University Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.

Rollins, 4-5, pounded out a total of 23 hits while scoring four in the first, one in the second, six in both the fifth and sixth innings, and three in the eighth.

In the first, the first five Tars to bat reached on two singles, a walk, an error and another single. Maloney made it 3-0 on a fielders' choice and Corbett made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly.

The fifth inning featured an RBI single by Maloney, a three-run homer by Corbett and a two-run double by sophomore second baseman Nick Breen (Debary, Fla.).  The Tars amassed nine hits in the sixth inning, including a two-run single up the middle by Maloney.

Bentley scored its only run in the eighth inning. After a walk and a hit batter, senior second baseman Zachary Littman (Abington, Mass./Abington HS) singled up the middle to bring in sophomore third baseman Mike Samko (Arlington, Mass./BB&N) from second.

Littman and grad student Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS) each had two hits for the Falcons (1-5), who were limited to five hits by four Rollins pitchers.

Sophomore righty Brian Auerbach (Palm Harbor, Fla.) started and pitched five scoreless innings for Rollins for his second win in three decisions. He allowed only three hits, including a first-inning triple to Muir, and struck out four.

For Rollins, Breen was 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Maloney also had three hits, as did both junior first baseman Mike Purcell (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore third baseman Grant Ashline (Naples, Fla.).

Bentley will return to central Florida Feb. 27-28 for a three-game series with Saint Anselm.
