WINTER PARK, Fla. -- Junior first baseman Mike Purcell (Cheshire, Conn.) accounted for five runs, with three scored and two RBI, as Rollins College put up multiple runs in four different innings for a 12-1 non-conference win over Bentley University in college baseball Saturday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.

With the win, Rollins evened the series with the Falcons, who won Friday night by a count of 4-3. The rubber game will be Sunday at noon.

It looked like Bentley would grab the early lead after a lead-off walk to senior second baseman Zachary Littman (Abington/Abington HS) and singles by sophomore third baseman Mike Samko (Arlington, Mass./BB&N) and grad student Ryan O'Connor (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport HS) loaded the bases with one out.

However, starter and winner Mike Gaughan (Walpole, Mass.) escaped unscathed with a pair of strikeouts.  He finished the game with nine in six innings of work. The sophomore lefty allowed only four hits and walked just one while evening his record at 1-1.

After keeping Bentley (1-4) off the scoreboard in the top of the first, the Tars (3-5) struck for three in the bottom half of the inning. There were two errors and a balk that proved costly for the Falcons in the inning.

Rollins broke the game open with five runs in the fourth and added two more in both the fifth and seventh innings.

Bentley's only run of the game was scored in the eighth. Graduate student Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS) delivered a one-out single to right, reached third on an error and scored on a double to right by junior shortstop Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./Amity Regional HS).

Six different Rollins players had multiple hits, including sophomore right fielder Tyler Fairbanks (Potomac, Md.) who was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Junior third baseman Joey Vecchione (Marlboro, N.Y.) was one of five with two hits and he also finished with three RBI.

Sophomore catcher Liam Matheson (Yarmouth Port, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Reg. HS), who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the fifth, had three of Bentley's eight hits.
