Stonehill Holds Off Bentley, 3-2; Nagy Homers for Falcons

WALTHAM, Mass. – Undefeated junior lefty Patrick Nicholson (Middleboro) and a pair of relievers combined on a three-hitter as Stonehill College edged Bentley University, 3-2, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball at rainy DeFelice Field Wednesday afternoon.

Nicholson, now 4-0 on the spring, allowed just two hits before exiting the game two batters into the seventh inning. He was charged with both Bentley runs, one of which scored after he was replaced, and struck out four. Freshman righty Michael Young (Mashpee) allowed one hit in his two innings of work and sophomore Aubrey Solomon (Groton) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save of the year.

Stonehill (16-7-1, 4-3 NE-10 Northeast) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Senior shortstop Dan Fratus (Plymouth) led off with a double to left and scored on a bloop double to right by sophomore first baseman Eddie Bowler (Hingham).

An inning later, the Skyhawks extended their lead to 3-0. Junior left fielder Brian Campbell (Franklin) doubled in a run and scored on a single by Bowler.

Bentley, hitless until an infield single by freshman left fielder Nick Neshe (Waltham/Waltham HS) one out into the sixth, scored both its runs in the seventh. Senior right fielder Tom Nagy (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe HS) led off with a home run to right, his third of the season and 15th of his career.

Junior shortstop Zachary Littman (Abington/Abington HS) followed with a walk, and after Young relieved Nicholson, freshman shortstop Mike Samko (Arlington/BB&N) provided an RBI double to center. He was on third with one out but Young was able to preserve the lead with a pair of ground ball outs.

Stonehill's seven hits included two apiece by Campbell, Bowler and junior DH Brian Hocking (Duxbury).

Littman reached base for the 15th consecutive game and Bentley junior catcher Bryan Rocha (Rehoboth/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) walked three times.

Sophomore righty Nick Taber (Eastham/Nauset Reg. HS) started for the Falcons and allowed seven hits and all three runs in six innings of work. Freshman Colin Harrington (Waterford, Conn./ Waterford HS) pitched two scoreless innings and sophomore lefty Evan Walsh (Arlington/Arlington Catholic HS) struck out two in the ninth.

Bentley (3-12, 1-2 NE-10 Northeast) will host Merrimack Saturday at 1 pm before playing a doubleheader at Assumption Sunday afternoon.
