Bridgeport Completes Series Sweep of Bentley, 7-1

TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Bridgeport scored in five consecutive innings and went on to record a 7-1 victory over Bentley University Saturday afternoon at the University of Tampa baseball field, completing a three-game sweep of the Falcons.

Bentley, which concluded the Florida portion of its schedule with a 2-10 record, scored its only run of the afternoon in the first inning. Senior center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass./ Bridgewater HS) drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on a triple to center by senior right fielder Tom Nagy (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe HS).

With the score even at 1-1, Bridgeport took possession of the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Senior DH Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.) singled to left and after a single to center by Sophomore third baseman Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.), scored the go-ahead run on an error. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Alec Jannotta (Branford, Conn.) brought in McCone with the Purple Knights' second run of the inning.

A two-run single by senior shortstop John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.) extended Bridgeport's lead to 5-1 after five and the Purple Knights added single runs in the sixth and seven innings.

Bridgeport, 3-6 overall, finished with nine hits, including two apiece from Ascenzia, Bickford and Jannotta. Junior righty Rob Anderson (Stratford, Conn.) earned the win after limiting the Falcons to seven hits and one run in 5.1 innings, and the tandem of freshman lefty PJ Martino (Medford, N.Y.) and senior righty Clayton Morris (Sharpsburg, Ga.) combined on 3.2 innings of one-hit scoreless relief.

Nagy was the only Falcon to have more than one hit as he finished 2-for-2 with a pair of walks.

Bentley is scheduled to begin the northern portion of its schedule next Saturday with a doubleheader at Le Moyne College.
