Rollins Uses 2 Home Runs in 10th to Stun Bentley

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Rollins College used tenth-inning home runs from sophomore catcher Chris Corbett (Stokesdale, N.C.) and sophomore third baseman Philip Burket (Winter Garden, Fla.) to rally and stun Bentley University, 10-9, in a wild non-conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.

The two homers gave the 5-4 Tars their only lead of the game and a sweep of the three-game series. Bentley led 5-0 after one, 8-5 in the middle of the sixth, 8-7 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and 9-8 after scoring in the top of the tenth.

Bentley junior shortstop Zachary Littman (Abington, Mass./Abington HS) led off the tenth with a double to left. He stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman second baseman Mike Samko (Arlington, Mass./BB&N) to put the Falcons back up one.

The lead was short-lived as Corbett opened the bottom of the tenth by clearing the left field wall, chasing Falcon reliever Will Alden (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) from the game. Sophomore righty Jack Burke (Reading, Mass./St. John's Prep) came on to replace him, and after retiring the first batter he faced, surrendered the game-winner to Burkett. It was the second homer of the season for both players.

The Falcons got off to a fast start, striking for five in the top of the first. Littman had an RBI single, right fielder Kevin Foley (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) picked up an RBI on a ground out, Samko hit a two-run triple to right and sophomore DH Chris Volberg (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Dominic HS) scored Samko on a sacrifice fly.

The lead disappeared completely when Rollins erupted for five in the third, but Bentley bounced back with three in the sixth. Sophomore third baseman Burton Deady (Andover, Mass./Andover HS) had an RBI single to break the tie and two more runs came in on a wild pitch.

Rollins closed the gap with single runs in the sixth and seventh, but Bentley was within an out of locking up its first win of the year in the ninth. However, senior DH Blake Hutton (Orlando, Fla.) doubled to left center, bringing in sophomore center fielder Peter Nicoletto (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) from third with the equalizer.

Bentley totaled 12 hits, including three by Ashworth and two by Littman and senior right fielder Tom Nagy (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe HS). Littman also scored twice and Samko finished with three RBI.

Rollins' offense included three hits and three RBI by Burket, three hits and two RBI by freshman shortstop Grant Ashline (Naples, Fla.) and two hits, two runs and two RBI by Nicoletto.

Before exiting after yielding the tying run in the ninth, senior righty Bill Sullivan (Carver, Mass./Carver HS) gave Bentley a quality relief appearance. He went five-and-a-third innings, allowing five hits and three runs while striking out a half-dozen.

Bentley, 0-6, is scheduled to play a three-game series against Pace University in Harrison, N.Y. Feb. 27-Mar. 1.
