Ashworth Has 4 Hits, but Bentley Falls to Bridgeport, 6-3

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Junior catcher Tim Bickford (Wallingford, Conn.) drove in four runs to lead the University of Bridgeport to a 6-3 win over Bentley University in non-conference college baseball action Friday afternoon at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

Both teams finished with 11 hits with freshman first baseman Justin Ashworth (Orange, Conn./ Amity Reg. HS) leading the Bentley attack with a four-for-four afternoon.

After a two-run single by Bickford gave the Purple Knights (5-6) the lead in the top of the fifth, Bentley matched the two runs in the bottom of the inning. Freshman catcher Chris Volberg (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Dominic HS) led off with a double to left and Ashworth followed with a single in the same direction to put runners on the corners.

Senior center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS) plated Volberg with a single through the right side and Ashworth later scored the tying run on a double play.

The 2-2 tie was broken in the seventh when Bridgeport struck for three runs. With one out, senior center fielder Jesse Solar (Marlton, N.J.) was hit by a pitch. He stole second and scored the go-ahead run on a single up the middle by freshman shortstop Dylan Steigerwald (Holbrook, N.Y.). Later in the inning, Bickford had a sacrifice fly and junior third baseman Mike Perry (East Haven, Conn.) made it 5-2 with an RBI single.

Bentley got one back in the eighth when senior right fielder Tom Nagy (Fairfield, Conn./ Ludlowe HS) doubled and scored on an error.

In addition to Ashworth's four hits, the Falcons (1-7)received two apiece from junior center fielder Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Mass./Xaverian Bros. HS) and freshman second baseman Burton Deady (Andover, Mass./Andover HS).
