Rey 5-Hitter and Top-of-Order Production Help Bentley Extend Win Streak to 5

EASTON, Mass. – Senior right-hander Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School) pitched a complete-game five-hitter and the top three in the Falcon lineup combined for eight hits, five runs and three RBI as Bentley University won its fifth straight, 7-2 win over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Wednesday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field.

Junior center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/Norwood HS) and freshman first baseman Evan Mondor (Rehoboth/Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS) each had three hits and two runs scored, and senior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) had two hits and two RBI.

Bentley got on the scoreboard with three two-out runs in the third inning. Mondor, with the first of his three hits, drove in junior third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose/Malden Catholic HS) with the first run and Gillis followed with a two-run single.

A sacrifice fly by junior left fielder Dante Padovani (Lynnfield/Lynnfield HS) in the fourth made it a 4-0 game, and Keady scored in the fifth inning for the Falcons' fifth run. Keady led off with a single to center, advanced 90 feet on Mondor's single through the left side, stole third (his 22nd theft of the season) and scored on a passed ball.

After Stonehill spoiled the shutout bid with an unearned run in the sixth, Bentley answered back with two in the top of the seventh. Mondor and Gillis opened the inning with back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position with a ground out. Mondor scored his second run of the game on a single through the left side by senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) and Gillis came in on a fielder's choice.

The Skyhawks picked up their second run in the ninth before Rey retired the final three batters of the game to notch his first victory of 2013 and lower his ERA to an impressive 1.97. He finished with three walks and six strikeouts.

Korwek, who had two hits, and junior shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS) each extended their hitting streaks, to 11 and 10 games, respectively. Overall, the Falcons out-hit the Skyhawks 12-5.

Bentley, with its seventh win in eight games, evened its overall record at 14-14 and improved to 3-2 in the NE-10's Northeast Division. Stonehill slipped to 17-12 overall and 3-2-1 in the division.

Bentley will be back in action this weekend with a three-game home series against Franklin Pierce, beginning with a home doubleheader Saturday at noon.
