6 Hits, 6 RBI & 5 Runs by Keady Helps Bentley Sweep Saint Anselm, 15-4 and 10-7

WALTHAM, Mass. – Six hits, six RBI, five runs scored and four stolen bases by junior center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/Norwood HS) helped Bentley University sweep Saint Anselm College, 15-4 and 10-7, in a Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at DeFelice Field.

Keady was four-for-five with three runs scored and two RBI in the opener, and he followed that up with two hits, two runs scored, four RBI and three stolen bases in the nightcap.

In the opener, Bentley jumped on top from the start, scoring four runs in the top of the first (the Falcons were the "visitor" since the games were scheduled to be played at Saint Anselm). Keady led off the game with a walk, stole second and scored on a double by freshman DH Bryan Rocha (Rehoboth/ Dighton-Rehoboth HS). Rocha later scored on a wild pitch, the first of six by the Hawks, and a two-run bloop single to right by freshman first baseman Evan Mondor (Rehoboth/Dighton-Rehoboth HS) made it 4-0.

After Saint Anselm came back with four in the fourth to pull within one at 5-4, Bentley regained control with a three-run fifth. Junior left fielder Dante Padovani (Lynnfield/Lynnfield HS) had a two-run opposite field single to right, and Keady beat out an infield single to drive in junior third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose/Malden Catholic HS) with the Falcons' eighth run.

A two-run double by senior catcher Kevin Korwek  (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) capped a four-run seventh that made it 12-4, and the Falcons added three more runs in the eighth.

In addition to the four by Keady, Bentley's 17 hits included three by Mondor and senior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy). Everyone in the lineup scored at least once, with Mondor matching Keady's three runs.

Senior righty JP Ashline (Clinton/Acton-Boxboro Reg. HS) earned his second win of the season with a six-inning performance that saw him allowed six hits and four runs, only one of which was earned.  John Yohe (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic HS), also a senior righty, came on to record the save with three scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and struck out four.

Game two saw the Falcons erupt for six runs in the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. Witkowski was grazed by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Mondor drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the second run. Keady cleared the bases with a double to left, stole third and came in from third on a wild pitch. It was one of five times in the twinbill that he advanced 90 feet on either a wild pitch or passed ball.

Bentley added to its lead with two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, with Rocha having a sacrifice fly in each frame.

Saint Anselm climbed back into the game with five runs, three unearned in the eighth, but got no closer.

Senior righty Jeff Croteau (Auburn/Auburn HS) improved to 4-2 on the season with eight innings of work. Before running into trouble in his final inning, he retired 13 of the previous 14 Hawk batters. Sophomore Connor Root (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North HS) pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

Bentley's 11 hits included two apiece by Keady, Witkowski, Mondor and junior shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./Locust Valley HS).

Junior center fielder Dan Lagasse (Londonderry, N.H.) had two hits in each game for Saint Anselm (8-13-1, 0-2 NE-10 Northeast).

Bentley (9-13, 2-1 NE-10 Northeast-10) and the Hawks will complete the three-game series Monday at 3:30 pm, also at DeFelice Field.
