Bermel Drives in Final 3 as Bentley Tops Assumption, 6-3

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Junior left fielder Will Bermel (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side HS) gave the Falcons the lead with a two-run double in the sixth and added insurance with an RBI single in the eighth as Bentley University began a six-game trip to Florida with a 5-3 win over Assumption College in non-conference college baseball Sunday afternoon at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

Bermel's hitting supported the pitching of senior right-handers JP Ashline (Clinton, Mass./ Acton-Boxboro Reg. HS) and Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School). Ashline pitched the first six to gain his first win of 2013 and Rey threw three scoreless innings of relief to pick up the save.

Junior right fielder Tom Nagy (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe HS) began the Falcons' sixth-inning rally with a single through the left side. He moved all the way to third on a wild pitch and scored on an infield single by senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS).

Following a single through the right side by junior shortstop Will Brennan (Locust Valley, N.Y./ Locust Valley HS) and a fly out, Bermel turned a one-run deficit into a 4-3 lead with his first two RBI as a collegian.

Bentley made it a two-run game in the eighth when Brennan again singled through the right side, moved up 90 feet on a grounder to short, and scored on Bermel's opposite field single to right.

Bentley scored the game's opening run in the first when senior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) cleared the left field fence with an 0-2 pitch, the homer his first of the season.

Assumption (2-8) scored twice on a single down the left field line by senior shortstop Shane Keddy (Worcester, Mass.) in the third and took advantage of two hits, a walk and two wild pitches to make it a 3-1 game in the fifth.

Ashline, in his six innings, allowed seven hits and three runs while walking two and striking out a pair. Rey retired nine of the ten batters he faced and struck out four.

Bentley outhit the Hounds 10-8 with Brennan 3-for-4 and both Bermel and freshman DH Bryan Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Reg. HS) having a pair of hits.

Bentley is back on the Alfond grass Monday for a noon encounter with the University of Bridgeport.
