FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Senior right-hander Vinnie Contaldi (Jupiter, Fla.) fired a two-hit shutout, making only 77 pitches, as Nova Southeastern University blanked Bentley University, 5-0, in the second of a three-game non-conference series at the NSU Baseball Complex Saturday afternoon.

Contaldi, now 3-1 on the season, allowed just three base runners and faced only two over the minimum during a five-strikeout, no-walk masterpiece. He retired the first 16 batters he faced before Bentley senior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) bunted for a base hit with one out in the sixth. Junior third baseman Nate Witkowski (Malden, Mass./Melrose Catholic HS) was hit by the next pitch, but two grounders got Contaldi out of the inning.

The other hit for 3-5 Bentley came off the bat of senior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./ Lawrence Academy), a single to center to open the center.

Contaldi received the only offense he would need when the 8-6 Sharks struck for two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Junior second baseman Carlos Asuaje (Weston, Fla.) led off with a single to center and stole both second and third. A one-out walk to senior Jose Rodriguez (Hialeah, Fla.) put runners on the corners, and Asuaje scored on an infield single by sophomore third baseman Brandon Sedell (Davie, Fla.). Later in the inning, Rodriguez scored on a bases-loaded grounder to short by junior left fielder William Rudolph (Parkland, Fla.).

The game's other three runs were scored in the sixth. The Sharks loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a walk, and Asuaje, who had the game-winning RBI in Friday's 3-2 11-inning win in the series opener, cleared them with a three-run double to right center.

Senior right-hander Jeff Croteau (Auburn, Mass./Auburn HS) was charged with the loss after allowing seven hits and all five runs in 5.2 innings of work. Sophomore Connor Root (Nashua, N.H./ Nashua HS North) finished for the Falcons and struck out five in 2.1 innings.

The series continues Sunday with a 2 pm first pitch.
